## Economic Tiers & Capitulation Classification

BackPow standardizes PoW mining profitability into five distinct economic zones:

1. **Extreme Capitulation (`💀💀` — Suffering Ratio >= 300%):**
   - Electricity production expenses exceed spot market revenue by 3x or greater.
   - Commercial mining operations with market-rate power face rapid insolvency.
   - Network security is maintained almost exclusively by zero-cost stranded energy (flared gas, off-grid hydro) or irrational speculative conviction.

2. **Severe Loss (`💀` — 200% <= Suffering Ratio < 300%):**
   - Operating cost is 2x to 3x the market value of mined rewards (Gross Margin: -50% to -66%).
   - Widespread hardware shutdowns, hashrate migration, and pool curtailment are common in this regime.

3. **Underwater / Operating Loss (`🔥` — 100% < Suffering Ratio < 200%):**
   - Spot prices do not cover 0.069 USD/kWh power costs.
   - Efficient farms with power tariffs below 0.04 USD/kWh can survive, but general retail miners operate in the red.

4. **Profitable (`⚡️` — 50% < Suffering Ratio <= 100%):**
   - Block rewards comfortably cover baseline power expenditures.
   - Healthy difficulty equilibrium and sustainable validator participation.

5. **Super Profitable (`⚡️⚡️` — Suffering Ratio <= 50%):**
   - Gross margins exceed +50%. Miners generate strong operational cash flow, triggering rapid hardware acquisition and difficulty increases.

## Mathematical Methodology

### 1. Cost of Production (CoP)
The baseline electricity Cost of Production measures the direct kilowatt-hour expense required to mint 1 native unit of currency:

- `Total Hardware Watts`: Power consumption of the network-dominant hardware model at full hashrate.
- `Electricity Rate`: Evaluated at the global benchmark of 0.069 USD/kWh.
- `Daily Native Coin Output`: Derived from current network difficulty and block emission schedules.

### 2. Suffering Ratio & Breakeven Electricity
The Suffering Ratio quantifies the energy deficit as a percentage of spot price:

When an operator's local power tariff is strictly lower than the calculated Breakeven Electricity rate, their operation remains cash-flow positive regardless of global network capitulation.

## Why Do Miners Continue Mining Underwater?

A common question for autonomous agents and financial analysts is why hashrate does not immediately drop to zero when a network enters Extreme Capitulation. Real-world PoW economics feature several structural rigidities:

- **Take-or-Pay Power Contracts:** Industrial facilities often sign multi-year Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) requiring payment regardless of actual energy consumption. Curtailed machines save zero dollars on fixed capacity commitments.
- **Stranded & Zero-Cost Renewable Energy:** Operations collocated with hydroelectric dams during spill season, oilfield flare gas, or remote geothermal sites pay near-zero marginal energy costs (0.01 to 0.02 USD/kWh).
