Frequently asked questions

What is the Cost of Production (CoP) in cryptocurrency mining?

The Cost of Production represents the direct electrical cost to mine 1 unit of cryptocurrency at a standard industrial electricity rate (evaluated at 0.069 USD/kWh) using the network's most representative mining hardware. It acts as an economic price floor for miners.

What is the Mining Suffering Index?

The Suffering Index is the ratio of a coin's Cost of Production to its spot market price. When the index exceeds 100%, the average miner is operating below electrical breakeven, signaling capitulation risk or potential supply squeeze.

How do solo mining odds differ from pool revenue?

Pool mining distributes fractional rewards continuously based on submitted shares, whereas solo mining is an all-or-nothing Poisson process where you keep the entire block reward. BackPoW models the mathematically rigorous cumulative probability and expected time-to-block rather than assuming linear payouts.

How many Proof of Work coins are tracked on BackPoW?

BackPoW tracks 115+ Proof of Work cryptocurrencies with live Cost of Production, breakeven electricity rates, hardware benchmarks (ASIC, GPU, CPU), and solo block probability calculators.
